About Base Course

Base Course is an independent publication about flatwork concrete and the ground underneath it — driveways, aprons, slabs, garage and warehouse floors, and the base, compaction and drainage that decide whether any of it lasts. It is written for people who own a slab that has cracked, sunk or started moving, and want to understand why before they spend money on it.

What we cover

The flat layer and what is under it. Subgrade and base stone, compaction, mix design and air entrainment, jointing and curing, drainage, coatings, and the several kinds of ground movement that break slabs — frost, expansive clay, settlement, subsidence and slope creep.

Ground is not generic. A driveway on Blackland Prairie clay in Texas fails differently from one on caliche in Tucson, on sand in northeast Florida, or on old fill above a worked-out coal seam in West Virginia. Where an article is about a particular region, it says so.

What we are not

We are not a contractor and we do not pour concrete. We do not run a directory, we take no payment for placement, and nothing here is a quotation or an offer of service. Where an article names a category of trade, that describes who normally does that work — it is not a referral.

We also do not give engineering or legal advice. Where an article touches on structural questions, permits or right-of-way, it describes the general position and points at the kind of professional or authority that can give you a determination for your own property. Codes and municipal requirements vary and they change.

How articles are written

Each piece is written in the first person by someone with direct experience of the work — finishers, excavation crews, testing technicians, inspectors, estimators, and owners who have already paid for the lesson. Costs are defensible ranges in US dollars drawn from recent quoting in the region concerned; they will be wrong for any specific job, and they exist so a reader can tell whether a quote is in the right universe.

We name no individuals, firms or credentials. That is deliberate: the point of the site is the reasoning, not an endorsement.
